2. Reading Comprehension:

1. Portfolio

1)-horz

Presentation

– Tell me about yourself

Good Afternoon, My name is Jane Saetent. I’m 24 years old. I’ve graduated from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang with Computer Engineering degree. I’m currently working for PricewaterhouseCoopers Singapore as a Senior Consultant under Technology competency.

Here is my brief Portfolio with details for selected experiences

– Explain your scope of work

As a firm, we provide consultancy services to both government and private organisations, from strategy to execution based on business operation. For me, I specialise in Information Management (e.g. Data Classification, Data Quality and Data Security) and Program Management (The process of managing several related projects to improve an organisation performance)

Example of strategy works are IT Strategy Design, IT Governance Design, IT Architecture Review

Example of execution works are System Implementation, System Configuration, IT Process Change Management

– So you’re actually working and living in Singapore?

Yes. I’m under PwC’s Globle mobility program called Secondment program, which the firm sends employees to work as local staff in oversea offices for 1 or 2 years. My agreement is 1 year and I will be back at the end of this month.

– What are the challenges you face in working abroad?

Language and cultural difference. It’s my first time living in English-speaking environment and people working in Singapore are literally from all parts of the world with their own unique accents. Especially when I have to work virtually with people from other territories, Call conference is a real disaster for me. In terms of cultural difference, people there tend to be more direct, vocal and very independent than Thais. However, it helps me learn not to judge people, be open-minded and have fun by immersing myself into other cultures.

– What are the lesson learned?

One big lesson I have learned is how to be adaptable and be part of new societies. Even if you are not used to the language, people or culture, the important thing is you must have the courage to speak up, go out there and network with others as well as volunteer to do various things you might have never heard of before. It helps you to become more mature, independent and grow both personally and professionally.

– So it means you pay for the air tickets and flew here twice, do you think it’s worth the money?

To be honest what attracted me first is the opportunity to travel around ASEAN countries for free. Therefore, if had still been in that case, I wouldn’t have paid for the tickets just to fly here for a day and took the test. My priority was changed, as I research for the program objectives, platform and activities. How can you find such a platform where you can learn so much about other cultures, discuss and brainstorm to solve international problems. So, this program is a priceless opportunity that cannot be afforded using only money.

– Don’t you think you have received enough opportunity? Why don’t let others have it?

Everyone was born different, have different experiences, advantages and disadvantages. Because of that, I think everyone deserves every opportunity they put their effort in to pursue. I put months of effort to prepare for this opportunity, so I consider myself entitled to be the selected participating youth as well.

– What are your hobbies?

I enjoy reading books, blogging (I have my own website) and hiking.

– How do you know this program? Why did you decide to join the program/expectation?

My colleague who used to be one of the participating youth 2 years ago told me about the program.

My expectations from the program are
1) Learning: meeting people from other countries will help widen my perspective and help me look at the word from a different angle.
2) Sharing: I’d like to represent Thai people to share our values and identity, form good relationships and promote cultural understanding between Thailand and our countries.

– How do you think the program with benefit you?

There are 2 aspects that I think the program will benefit me. The first one is a personal level
1) Ability to survive outside my comfort zone
2) Friends and connections benefiting both career life and personal life in the long run

The other aspect is country level
1) Minimizing conflict and maximizing cooperation results from developing understanding of other cultures and differences
2) Ability to solve national and international problems results from discussing and brainstorming with people who have common goals.

– Strengths and Weaknesses?

Strengths
I’m adaptable, love to learn new things and ready to step outside of my comfort zone. I have a “can-do” attitude and I’m a hard worker who will do whatever it takes to meet my goal.

Weaknesses
I find it hard to say no to people and from time to time I overwork myself. So now I’m working on my negotiation skills. Another thing is I’m always too hard on my self. My expectation of myself is very high and sometimes it causes me stress. Now I’ve adjusted the level of expectation but still need to work on that.

– Why do you think you should be selected to be a representative of this program? (Emphasize your knowledge and experience to demonstrate your value)

(In case the referee says “better than other candidates”) I think everyone have their unique talents and ability. However,

I believe that will be successful as participating youth representing my own country. I’m adaptable, open-minded and willing to learn about other cultures, be one of the people who help strengthen relationship among Japan and ASEAN countries. I am very passionate about transforming Thailand into more productive, competitive and autonomous country. and I do believe that our people have capability to do that. We just need solid guidance or directions. Hopefully whatever we do in the program will help more or less in this point.

– What will you feel if you are not selected?

it’s quite normal to be sad. But I won’t regret putting my effort into what I think worth pursuing. Also, I quite enjoyed the process of preparation for going through the test and interview. It motivated me to think and be creative. For example the special ability I want to show to all of you. How can I make it interesting, relevant and attractive. Also, it taught me to read news, start paying attention to the world and what’s happening around me, analyse and think about possible solutions.

– Do you have any question or anything to say?

I’d like to ask a question. What specific qualifications or characteristics you are looking for in selecting candidates to represent our country for this program? like English proficiency, positive attitude, learning ability or the combination of specific skills.

I did my best, put in everything I have and I hope I will be one of the person you are looking for. It is a pleasure to meet you all.
